Located in Gilroy, California, the philosophy and dream of Sarah’s Vineyard brings together the world of fine wine, fine food, and fine arts. Founded in 1978 in a hidden corner of the southwestern Santa Clara Valley, Sarah’s Vineyard produces handmade wines using traditional techniques.
The Santa Cruz Mountain foothills near a windy mountain pass afford Sarah’s Vineyard a coastal microclimate of foggy mornings, sunny afternoons tempered by strong ocean breezes and chilly nights that are ideal conditions for premium Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Rhône varietals.
Sarah’s Vineyard harvests various blocks in each vineyard based upon careful monitoring of grape sugar and acidity with a focus on the pH of the grapes. To insure the highest quality of fruit at the crush pad, all harvesting is done by hand from 6am til noon. Gentle de-stemming and sorting provides an output of perfect whole berries. Whole berry fermentation, with no crushing of berries or pumping of must, contributes to the high quality of our wines. Free run juice is aged separately from lightly pressed (1.6 bar) wine prior to blending and bottling. We use only French oak 228 liter barrels which are topped twice monthly in our humidity controlled barrel room. Bottling is done on premises using our own small fully automated bottling line, which includes nitrogen sparging and vacuum corking to limit oxygen pickup. Typically, our wines receive six months to one year of bottle aging before release.

Secrets abound in the world of wine-making. Secret vineyards, secret blends, secrets of the cellar – our Winemaker, Joe Tapparo, is a man of countless secrets. He carefully searches each of California’s growing regions for vineyards best suited to the varietals he crafts. He looks to Paso Robles for lush, ripe Cabernet Sauvignon, Monterey County for crisp, refreshing Chardonnay and the windswept Santa Lucia Highlands for bright, red-fruit driven Pinot Noir. Inside the cellar, all JT would reveal is that he uses French, American and Hungarian oak barrels for aging. Once the wines have aged, it’s time to create the final secret blends.

Weingut St. Urbans-Hof was first established in 1947 by Nicolaus Weis who was awarded the prestigiour title “oekonomierat” (Chancellor of Agriculture) in 1969 for his dedication to German viticulture traditions and his name and title became part of the winery name, St. Urbans-Hof Oekonomierat Nic. Weis Weingut. His son, Hermann and daughter-in-las Ida, carried forward the tradition and further developed the winery through the acquisition of prime vineyard sites in the Mosel and Saar Valleys. This third generation wine making family uses traditional single-post trellis system that limits yield, enhances quality, and insures the best possible fruit.
In the early 1980s a young Stefano Mancinelli recognized the amazing potential of a local red grape that was all but extinct. Its tendency to develop fissures in the skin and drip precious juice when it is optimally ripe earned it the name lacrima (tears) it also earned it the disdain of the local growers who could not be bothered with this difficult grape. Stefano is specialized in Lacrima di Morro d’Alba and has a outside laboratory certify that his Lacrimas are 100%. A little Lacrima goes a long way and more unscrupulous growers are adding 15% into their Montepulciano or Sangiovese and marketing it as 100%.
Sutro Wine Company
SUTRO is a limited production of premium terroir-driven wine from historic Warnecke Ranch & Vineyard located on Chalk Hill Road in the Alexander Valley.
Established in 1911 along the banks of the Russian River, Warnecke Ranch and Vineyard was planted to Bordeaux varietals by famed architect John Carl Warnecke in 1972. building on five generations of land stewardship, Eliot and Alice (granddaughter of John Carl Warnecke) began the wine project in 2012 with carefully selected portions of the vineyard.
The wines are a true expression of Alexander Valley – minimal intervention winemaking, restrained use of new oak, and traditional blends paired with a California site generating a nuanced balance between elegance and power.
Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from the original 45+ year old block situated at the foot of Chalk Hill. The dry-farmed vines with their deep roots and gnarled wood produce a scant 2 tons to the acre, lending remarkable concentration to the fruit.
Along the ridge that runs from Chalk Hill to the Russian River is the steeply terraced Merlot block. Alice & Eliot made their first wines from this fruit seven years ago and continue to seek its balanced fruit emblematic of the naturally low yielding vines and great exposure that characterize this site.
